Community Policing

No doubt there are many people living in and around Rosewell who can remember the days that there was a permanent police presence in the village. They often cite that the disappearance of the traditional village bobby has resulted in the perception that the police are not interested in rural or village problems.
This is not true:
rural crime and the fear of crime is no less important than urban crime and we are fully committed to providing the best service possible. The village and outlying areas are policed from Bonnyrigg and the officer in charge of the station is Inspector Ronnie Millar, he has given a commitment to increase the number of patrols in the area.
So, just because you don't see a uniformed officer walking the streets everyday that doesn't mean to say that they have disappeared altogether.

Home Safety Tips

Property marking is an inexpensive and simple way of making your possessions identifiable and increase your chance of them being returned to you if stolen.
On your possessions your should mark your postcode followed by your house number or the first two letters of your house name.
Serial numbers of items such as TVs, Videos, Hi-fi' equipment and cameras should be recorded.
Thieves find identifiable property dangerous to handle and difficult to dispose of.
Ceramic marking pens have been developed to mark china, glass.
Only use an ultraviolet pen when other methods would reduce the value of the object.
Difficult objects to mark should be photographed preferably in colour.
Every year property worth thousands of pounds is recovered by the police and not returned to owners because it cannot be properly identified.

Figures show at the moment that break-ins to houses and garden sheds are thankfully few and far between. However this is not a sign to become complacent.

You should consider contacting the police as they offer a:

FREE CRIME
PREVENTION SURVEY

The survey covers your home and any other outbuildings on your property.

To arrange this just call me at Bonnyrigg to arrange a visit.

SECURITY ADVICE FOR DARKER NIGHTS
Make sure you leave your home both day and night.
If you go out at night, draw the curtains and leave the lights
on both downstairs and upstairs, possibly in the bathroom (not just the hall).

Make use of timer switches which can be linked to a radio to create,
where possible the sound of voices in the house.

Never keep savings or large sums of money in the house.
It is much safer in an account in a building society, bank or post office.

If someone calls at your door: CHECK to see who it is by using the door viewer
if you have one, or look through a front window.
An external light for use during the hours of darkness would be helpful.
Always put the chain on before you open the door.
The leaflet THE FAMILY GUIDE has full details on preventing crime,
which can be obtained from your local police station.
