Rosewell Village History

The Village dates back to the mid-eighteenth century

A former mining village, the majority of the village was created and owned by the Manager of Whitehill Coillery, Archibald Hood.

The workers were housed in rows of terraced cottages, each with its own garden. Hood take a detailed interest in every aspect of the running of his village, ensuring the establishment of churches, schools, a co-operative store and using the 'Gothenburg' system to put the profits from the public house back into community projects.

Today Rosewell is a thriving community, new housing developments and businesses have helped to develop the village.
